Alice Apologizes by Chris Regier Fordyce
“Jane, come help me,” Alice said. “I want to find a cucumber in Grandma’s garden.”
Jane, who had just found a wonderful, sunny place in the lawn to take a nap,
pretended not to hear Alice. Some of the adventures Alice wanted to go on did not interest Jane.

“Fine,” Alice said. “I will find a cucumber all by myself. Grandma says they are cool and green and crunchy, Jane.
I think that sounds wonderful. When I find one, you will wish you had helped me look. ”

“Hmmm,” said Alice. “This is not a cucumber plant. It is a pepper plant.
Grandma says peppers are green and crunchy, but not cool, like a cucumber.”

“Nope,” said Alice. “These are beets. They are not green, not crunchy and not cool.”
“Oh, my goodness!” Alice said. “Jane, I just found an amazing squash blossom!”
“This squash blossom smells like golden honey, Jane. Are you sure you don’t want to help me look for cucumbers?
You are missing all the wonderful things in this garden.”
But Jane was having a wonderful dream about bacon and she didn’t wake up to help Alice.

Alice was beginning to wonder if she really could find a cucumber by herself.
“I have found peppers, beets and squash blossoms,” Alice said. “But I just can’t find a cucumber.”

“I must find a way to get Jane to help me,” Alice said.
“A real friend wouldn’t just sleep in the sun and make me do all the work.”

“Jane,” Alice said. “If you are really my friend you will help me.”
Jane, who really was Alice’s friend, came to help. But Jane had a problem.
She didn’t know what a cucumber looked like so she led Alice to the carrots, instead.

“Jane, you found the carrots,” Alice said. “You are not very smart if you think a carrot is a cucumber.
Everyone knows carrots are orange, and cucumbers are green!”
Alice laughed while Jane wished she could go back to her nap where no one made fun of her.

“Finally!” Alice said. “I have found the cucumbers, Jane. You can go back to your nap, because I don’t need you anymore.”
So Jane went back to her napping spot. But the sun had gone behind a cloud and she missed her friend, Alice.
Jane was very sad.

Jane was very sad.
“Grandma was right,” Alice said. “This cucumber is cool and green and crunchy. I will eat it and be happy.”
But Alice wasn’t happy. She knew she had made Jane feel bad and she couldn’t be happy if her friend Jane wasn’t happy.

“Jane, I want you to have the cucumber,” Alice said. “I am sorry I laughed at you.
You are a good friend and you came to help me when I needed it.”

Jane, who was surprised at how tasty the cucumber was, breathed a sigh of relief.
She and Alice were once again great friends and they could look forward to many more adventures together.
